Chapter Eight
Lincoln stared at the choppy waves as a crash of thunder sounded too close for comfort. His radar picked up no proof that another boat was nearby. Where the hell was it? If he didn’t find it soon, he might have to contact Emily and ask her to wake Ray for extra help.
“I’ll give it a few more minutes,” he murmured.
He narrowed his eyes, the momentary lapse of concentration opening a chink in his mind. Gently, in case Emily was dozing, he reached out to her.
“Emily?”
A voice filtered back. “Lincoln? Lincoln, can you hear me?”
Anstace? Surely not. What would she be doing contacting him after so long?
“Anstace?”
“Thank the heavens I got through. Come back to shore.”
“What? How do you know—”
“Come back, Lincoln. Cormag…has shown me something. You should not be out there. You need to come back.”
“What has he shown you? Is it Emily? Is she in danger? Has something happened?”
“Broughton—“
“Oh, fuck no. I knew I should have made her come with me. Why the fuck wasn’t I more forceful? If he’s hurt her I’ll—”
“Emily is fine. For now. She is outside a house at some place called…is it Clevedon’s Crag?”
“Yes, that’s right, but what is she doing there?”
Lincoln turned the wheel, no question in his mind that he would return to shore and leave whoever was in trouble out here to perish. He shoved the thought of that from his mind and would deal with the guilt later. Emily was more important. Without her he would—
“You would not die without her, Lincoln. You’d merely carry on. But you must hurry. She is bleeding. If she does not wake to heal, she’ll bleed out, go into a coma because she’s weak.”
“Go to her, Anstace. Or send someone to help her. I can’t get there fast enough. Shit! Why did I have to get a call-out tonight?”
“The call was from Broughton. Do not worry yourself over feeling any guilt. There is no one out there to save.”
Lincoln steered the boat toward his destination, slamming his fist against the side of the cabin. “Bastard! Where is he? I’ll—”
“Emily killed him.”
“What? ” Shock zipped through him. “She what?”
“I suspect you are not deaf, Lincoln. Now, think carefully about what you asked of me. Are you sure you want me to send someone to Emily’s aid? You know what will happen if you do. Cormag will expect something in return.”
He mentally calculated the time it would take to reach Emily at top speed, and took into consideration the volatile sea and the lashing rain. Yes. Send someone to her. Now. He gritted his teeth, the boat lurching beneath him.
“It will be done. Cormag—”
“Yes, I will have to meet with Cormag.” He closed his eyes for a second, opening them to see a jut of land in the distance, the moon behind it.
“I will see you soon, Lincoln. Take the boat back home to the lighthouse.”
“Yes, yes,” he whispered. “Yes, damn it.”
